Los Angeles Construction Accident Paraplegia Injury Lawyer
What is Paraplegia or a Paraplegic Accident?
Paraplegia is a physical condition which generally results from some traumatic injury to the spinal cord, such as a spinal cord injury (SCI), brain and head injury, or someother congenital condition. Similar to quadriplegia, paraplegia is paralysis of the lower half of the human body. Therefore, the lower half and lower extremities of the paraplegic person is paralyzed and they are unable to move.
Can I Recover From My Paraplegia Construction Accident Injury?
As with all types of injuries sustained on a Los Angeles construction site, the extent of the injuries may vary greatly. It has been documented that some paraplegic accidents after physical therapy and hard work do regain their ability to walk again. Unfortunately, the majority of the individuals who suffer from paraplegia do not regain their ability to walk again and remain mostly immobile for the remainder of their lives. They are also prone to have health problems which are a direct result of their paraplegic injuries.
Additionally, depending on the extent of the damage to the spinal cord and how the spinal cord was injured, paraplegia generally limits or paralyzes both sides of the lower portion of the body. If the spinal cord is damaged near the top of the spine, it may ultimately result in quadriplegia where both the arms and the legs of the person are paralyzed.
Treatment For Paraplegia and Quadriplegia
Generally, any and all treatment for paralysis, paraplegia and quadriplegia uses mechanical devices which attempt to strengthen the muscles around the spinal cord injury as well as additional psychological therapy and physical therapy. While it has been demonstrated that these measures will improve the paraplegics or quadriplegics quality of life, however these and other medical expenses may be too high for the paraplegic or quadriplegic to continue to seek treatment. Otherwise, this therapy and other medical expenses would create extreme financial burdens and hardships for the injured person's family.
